Bob graduated from Auburn University in 1954 with a degree
in Mechanical Engineering and a Navy commission. After
serving in the Navy for three and a half years, he entered
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned
In 1962, Bob moved to Charlotte to work for a factoring company.
He entered the life insurance business in 1966 with Pilot
Life. In 1971, Bob joined Adon Smith and formed Smith,
Culbertson, Gilley, Hubbard, Inc. In 1977, he became
a General American agent and, in 1988, the corporate name
was changed to The Morehead Group. He joined Partners
Group (now National
Financial Partners ) in 1992.
On a local level, Bob has been active in both the Republican and
Democratic parties, served as an organizing director of
two community banks that were subsequently merged with
larger ones, was elected to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School
Board, and has been a director of various arts and civic groups.
He and his wife Peggy are avid art collectors and Bob is an
accomplished amateur potter. They have four children
and ten grandchildren.
